In these challenging economic times, the need for assistance is especially great. According to Federal college financial assistance guidelines, nearly half (43%) of Foundation applicants are unable to rely on their families for any assistance for their college educations. Families of an additional 28% can afford to contribute less than $2,000 per year.

Meanwhile, the cost of education is rising – to $9,800 per year for George Mason University and $4,700 per year for Northern Virginia Community College.

In 2010 – the Foundation awarded $88,000 to 36 members of the Class of 2010, many of whom became the first in their families to attend college.
The need for scholarships was great: the five neediest applicants had family incomes of less than $15,000. Individual scholarship awards ranged from $500 to $5,500.
These recipients are now pursuing post-secondary education at four-year colleges, community colleges and technical training programs.
Among the Class of 2010 awardees…

  • 13 of the 36 are attending NVCC and GMU (as both commuters and on-campus students);
  • 97 % are attending in-state institutions (with 3% out-of-state);
  • and 90 % are attending public schools (with 10% attending private).
